I "think" the answer is yes but is worth asking before I dive in.... so here goes..

I own CS4 design premium and very familiar with Photoshop and illustrator but NOT flash Pro. I want to make a HD 1080i HDTV 2-d technical video animation and wish to know if Flash is a good tool for this. This video would be used for corporate tradeshows on an hdtv.

Specifically I want to combine pictures and overlay 2-d animated arrows, text balloons etc to make a 2-d technical animation of how a product line works. I need to have keyframed pans and zooms with this also. All this needs to be converted to 1920x1080P 29fps HDTV MP4. I own and proficient at Vegas Video 9 PRO NLE which can convert a variety of avi to mp4.

My questions are..
Is adobe cs4 flash PRO able to do this with my other software? Is it the best choice? And what is the learning curve for what I want to do?

Brain, Grim do you have any input on this?
I know 3d stuff like Maya, and C4d can do this but since this is 2D those would be overkill with higher learning curves.. In the realm of 2d animations what else is there really beside flash? After effects can do some but is not geared towards original content creation.

Truthfully, I only know enough Flash to get me by. And almost all of my involvement with Flash is web based buttons and site overlays.

I think the animation part can be done. But, I don't have a clue on what the exported/converted video would be like.

IMO, Flash isn't the easiest medium to master and there are definite learning curves here. Most of the cool shit you can do with Flash requires action scripting. Which is a whole different animal all together.

I'm not too much help here.

na,

More help then any of the other forums outside of mscwars I have posted on, your the first to even respond actually which really surprises me. And when I called Adobe Tech support just to ask if flash is capable of this type of work they told me sorry but I don't have a tech support contract with them so I'll have to try the adobe forums for help.. (no answer yet)..

Thing is,
You see 2d animations EVERWHERE.. Digital signage at you bank, History channel-leanrning channel, news etc..

I don't know anything about it really. But I did find this book excerpt which (If I'm reading it correctly) seems to suggest that you can do it.

Looks like it can do it.. How much effort and learning curve it takes I don't know...

I was able to test the concept anyway myself..

here,

Note... right click and download the video then play with a media player.

This above vid also shows why I think Flash fits the bill for my goal. Sure you can move stuff around in after effects or a non linear editor but I want to utilize animated vector overlay assets like shown here that can be created and altered like you can do in Flash.

I don't "think" I will need to do any action3 programming because that is mainly tailored for interactivity and this is for purely a animation.

Ok, so I called around today to some companies that specialize in 2d/3d animation services for broadcast TV. Because I am curious as to what this would cost to outsource. I talked to the owner of one of the companies and learned some interesting things. (these are very rough not written in stone)

* Looks like they natively work in 2d and 3d animation using Maya. This is likely where the composting would be done.

* Would take aprox 3 months and 10's of thousands to do for a 9 minute spot.

Ahhh nothing like biting off more then one can chew. Well I think am going to stick with flash, no way I am going to learn maya and flash skills will have much more long term use to me.
